We arrived at this little takeaway with low expectations, and left pleasantly surprised. Let’s get this out of the way from the start – the mains are average. They’re a decent feed for the price ($12 nets you a large, and I mean LARGE main + rice), but nothing worth singing about. The sweets, on the other hand…
Oh, the sweets. This is probably the first Indian takeaway I’ve encountered in New Zealand with rows of sweets lining their front counter. The names look a little intimidating at first (and they aren’t matched to the trays), hence my furious Googling while waiting for our mains to be ready. I needn’t have worried, though – the young man at the counter offered to recommend some to us, and helpfully explained what each dessert consisted of and what it tasted like. We walked away with a mix-and-match container of four desserts, for all of $3!
I’m not any sort of authority on Indian sweets, but they reminded me of the sweets a kindly old Indian neighbour of mine used to serve at her house for Diwali. They were very rich and a little oily, which takes some getting used to, but also incredibly delicious and had distinct flavours.
Would definitely return for the sweets, though we’re a bit iffy about the mains.
