Gorgeous surroundings, but the food and service was rather lacklustre. It’s a pity, really, because you would be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful place for a cafe setting in Hamilton City – the gardens themselves are lovely and well worth a visit in and of themselves.
To start with, the dishes were cleared from tables very, very slowly. Everyone just ended up having to clear their own tables and dump the dishes onto a neighbouring empty table before seating themselves. To be fair, though, the staff were probably struggling as they appeared to be pretty short-handed, so I would probably fault the establishment for this, not the waiters themselves.
Our food, also, was nothing to write home about. My pancakes tasted gluey and plain, worse than the pre-mixed variety, and the pears served with it were just sliced raw pears, not poached – all in all, it seemed like a meal that you could easily whip up at home for 10 minutes and $3. The boy’s burger was also extremely average, and the fries did not even come with aioli, only ketchup. This might have been acceptable for a budget eatery, but not for one with prices on the medium to high side.
I do hope they pick up their game, as they already have so much going for them in terms of their surroundings. Unfortunately, until they do, we’ll probably be taking a picnic to the gardens instead.
(As a side note, apologies for the blog being down over the past few days. An update to one of my wordpress plugins broke the site, and I didn’t even realize it until I tried to access it today!)
