Gorgeous quaint cafe 15 minutes away from Hamilton City, with one of the prettiest outdoor dining areas I’ve ever dined in. Beautifully landscaped gardens, lush greenery, a gazebo and even an outdoors chess and checkers set!
Our lunch coincided with a large group’s visit, so there were a few issues at the start. It took a while to get our menus and water, the waitress didn’t return to take our order for 10 minutes so we just ordered at the counter, and I also had to get my glass changed because the one the waitress brought out was dirty. And the lamb shanks that I had been intending to order were all ordered out by the large group. :( The lady at the counter was very sweet and apologetic about it, though, so I’ll just chalk it up to bad timing and bad luck for us.
The food was, to be honest, nothing to write home about. My partner had the open sandwich with pulled pork, chutney, cheese, caramelized onions and greens, while I finally settled for the toastie with smoked chicken, camembert cheese, and cranberry jelly. Both meals were decent, but nothing you couldn’t easily whip up at home in 10 minutes. The highlight of the meal was actually my white rose tea, which arrived with a beautiful china teacup and saucer! Loved the presentation, it’s so rare to have tea served in real china.
Took a stroll around their gift shop after our meal – their interior was as beautifully-decorated as the outdoor area, which says a lot! They had a section devoted to Christmassy things at this time of the year.
All in all, a lovely lunch in beautiful surroundings, but I wouldn’t order the same mains again. I’ll reserve my judgment about their food until I manage to try their lamb shanks, though, which I’ve heard are pretty good.
